WriteStories Review

Sharing is caring!

Alright, buckle up for this WriteStories Review, friends! We all want our kids to be brilliant little writers, churning out stories that would make Shakespeare jealous (okay, maybe not Shakespeare, but at least better than that scribbled mess about the pooping dinosaur they wrote last week). Getting kids excited about writing can sometimes feel like trying to climb Mount Everest in flip-flops during a blizzard.

WriteStories a Revew

Enter WriteStories by Scriptive, the website that might actually make writing fun for your budding Hemingway (and save your sanity in the process). This isn’t just another boring educational tool; it’s like a playground for their imagination, where they can create their own stories with the help of some seriously cool illustrations. Think of it as their own personal writing superhero, here to rescue them from the dreaded “I don’t know what to write!” meltdown.

What is WriteStories?

WriteStories is an online platform designed to help children in grades K-8 improve their creative writing skills. It uses visually engaging illustrations from professionally published books (with the original text removed) to inspire kids to write their own stories.

WriteStories provides the pictures, and your child provides the words! This helps overcome the blank page hurdle and gets those creative juices flowing.

Key Features and Benefits of WriteStories

Right off the bat, I’ll tell you my favorite part of the whole program is how easy it is to navigate and get started. So many educational programs can be complicated, but once you get logged into WriteStories, in one click of a book, you can already begin writing. Some other great features include:

  • An Interactive Parent Dashboard
  • Customizable Assignments (You can assign both books to work on and tasks to do while working on them)
  • There is a voice-to-text feature for those students who struggle with typing but still want to work on creative writing.
  • Many of the books are familiar and have interesting illustrations to help spark creativity.
  • As your children write, they earn badges to help keep them motivated.

Our Experience using WriteStories

When I was given the opportunity to review this program, I had thought “we do a lot of formal writing, but we don’t have much experience with creative writing” So this seemed like the perfect opportunity to work on that skill.

In full disclosure, although the program touts that it’s for Kindergarten through eighth grade, my daughter is in 7th and I think she might be just at the brink of being too old for the program.

When I first introduced her to it, she actually asked, “am I too old for this?” but once we got logged into the program and I showed her how it worked, I was surprised to find that she actually really loved the idea of creating whole new stories from favorite books she has known.

Writing a story with WriteStories

What I especially loved about this program (specifically because my daughter is older) is that you can create assignments with tasks for them to do. I choose a book that I wanted her to work specifically on writing with strong verbs and practicing quotation marks.

When she logs into her account, she sees her assignment and can work on it. When she finishes her book, I can check it.

Who Would Benefit from WriteStories?

This is just my opinion, but that’s what you’re here for right? I think all ages can benefit from this, because creative writing is for everyone! But I could see first through fourth graders enjoying this the most.

If you have a reluctant writer or one that struggles with writing, this might be just what they need to build confidence, gain motivation and sharpen their communication skills.
