Monster Hop -A Color Game for Preschoolers
Learning colors typically come naturally for young children. If you are a parent you probably catch yourself naming them to your preschooler a dozen times a day as you go about your regular routine. This cute and colorful Monster Hop board game will help reinforce those color skills while adding the extra fun of trying to beat an opponent to the finish line.
Why Color Recognition Matters
Before we dive into the game, let’s discuss why color recognition in preschoolers is essential:
- Sorting and Categorization: Understanding colors paves the way for sorting and categorizing objects. It’s a foundational skill for logical thinking.
- Building Vocabulary: Learning color names expands a child’s vocabulary and improves their descriptive abilities.
- Visual Discrimination: Color recognition enhances a child’s ability to pick out details and spot similarities and differences.
- Reading and Writing Readiness: This skill helps children recognize color words when reading and writing.
How to Play the Monster Hop Color Game
Materials Needed:
- Print out of the Game Board
- Print out of the Game Cards (print 2-3 copies)
- Game markers, one for each player
Cut out the monster game cards and place them face down next to the game board. Place a game marker on the starting place. (Any kind of marker can be used)
The first player will flip over a card, say the name of the color and then move their marker to the closest corresponding color.
The player that reaches the finish line first wins.
Extension Ideas for Monster Color Hop
Action Time!: Add silly instructions to the colored squares like “Jump like a green frog” or “Roar like a red monster!”
Monster Mashup: Have children draw two monster cards at a time, requiring them to find a space that corresponds to either color.
