Where in the World…? A Global Mystery Adventure is a 12-week, hands-on geography unit designed for students in 2nd–4th grade. Each week, students follow clues to a mystery destination while learning about countries, cultures, famous landmarks, foods, languages, and important geography and map skills.
But there’s a bigger mystery unfolding…
Students are following a mysterious traveler around the globe. Each lesson brings them one step closer to discovering where she’s headed next. During the final lesson, they’ll put everything they’ve learned to the test, solve the last series of challenges, and uncover her final hiding place!
This isn’t geography from a textbook. Students will solve, move, create, decode, investigate, and explore their way around the world.
Countries Students Will Explore
Over 12 lessons, students travel to:
Week 1: Mexico — Locating Continents
Week 2: Canada — Latitude & Longitude
Week 3: Peru — Using a Map Key
Week 4: France — Understanding Coordinates
Week 5: Egypt — Landforms
Week 6: India — Bodies of Water
Week 7: England — The Five Oceans
Week 8: Japan — Continents & Oceans Review
Week 9: Australia — Rural, Suburban & Urban Communities
Week 10: South Africa & Kenya — Continent → Country → State/Region → City
Week 11: Italy — Map Skills Review
Week 12: China — Final Geography Challenge & Mystery Reveal
What Does a Lesson Look Like?
Each country becomes its own mini mystery adventure.
Students receive clues that gradually help them determine where in the world they’ve traveled. Along the way, they rotate through activities that introduce geography, culture, landmarks, language, food, and more.
Depending on the country, students may:
- Decode secret messages
- Use coordinates to find locations
- Read maps and map keys
- Identify continents and oceans
- Match landmarks and cultural symbols
- Investigate foods from around the world
- Learn simple words and greetings in other languages
- Sort animals by where they live
- Explore landforms and bodies of water
- Solve puzzles
- Complete hands-on crafts
- Follow mystery clues
- Participate in movement games
- Collect clues that lead to the mystery destination
The activities change throughout the unit so students aren’t completing the exact same worksheet every week.
Geography & Map Skills Covered
This unit goes beyond simply memorizing country names. Students build real introductory geography skills throughout the 12 weeks, including:
- The seven continents
- The five oceans
- Latitude and longitude
- Coordinates
- Map keys and symbols
- Landforms
- Bodies of water
- Continents, countries, states/regions and cities
- Rural, suburban and urban communities
- Using maps to locate places
- Reading geographic clues
- Comparing locations around the world
- Applying multiple map skills to solve a problem
Skills are intentionally reviewed and revisited, giving students multiple opportunities to practice what they’ve learned.
It’s More Than Map Skills!
One of my favorite parts of this unit is that students aren’t just finding places on a map—they’re getting a glimpse into what makes each place interesting.
Throughout their travels, students encounter:
Famous Landmarks — Machu Picchu, the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, Taj Mahal, Mount Fuji, the Great Barrier Reef, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Great Wall of China and more.
Culture & Symbols — Students discover recognizable symbols, traditions, animals, architecture and customs connected to each destination.
Language — Bonjour! Ciao! Jambo! Konnichiwa! Students encounter simple greetings and words from around the world.
Food — From Italian gelato to Kenyan ugali, students discover foods that help make each destination unique.
Hands-On Activities
Because geography is much more memorable when students actually do something with it, this unit incorporates hands-on learning throughout.
Activities include things like creating a Japanese paper lantern, designing an Australian-inspired boomerang activity, solving ciphers, completing picture sorts, matching landmarks, assembling puzzles, playing geography movement games, and participating in map challenges.
These activities are designed to make geography feel like an adventure rather than another subject to memorize.
The Final Mystery
The last lesson is different from all the others!
Students become Global Detectives and use what they’ve learned throughout the entire unit to complete a series of geography challenges.
They’ll revisit:
Continents → Oceans → Latitude & Longitude → Coordinates → Map Keys → Landforms → Bodies of Water → Communities → Countries & Cultures
As they successfully complete the challenges, students collect pieces of a mystery picture.
Piece by piece, the picture begins to reveal Carmen’s final destination…
CHINA!
The unit ends with a short study of China, a final True or False geography challenge, and the moment students have been waiting for:
They finally solve the case!
