• Point of View: Whose story is it? We explore how different perspectives shape our understanding of events. The engaging The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs challenges our assumptions and demonstrates the power of perspective.

• Author’s Purpose: What’s the author’s motive? Is it to persuade, inform, or entertain? We become purpose detectives, investigating texts like Hey Little Ant to uncover the hidden intentions behind the words.
• Figurative Language: We decode the secret language of similes, metaphors, and hyperboles, making reading a more vibrant and imaginative experience. A roller coaster of a picture book helps us practice recognizing these literary devices.
• Making Inferences: Time to read between the lines! We’ll uncover hidden meanings and draw conclusions based on textual evidence. The classic Jumanji is our playground for practicing these inference skills.

• Making Connections: How does the story relate to me and the world around me? We bridge the gap between text and personal experience, making reading more meaningful. Balloons Over Broadway inspires us to find connections in unexpected places.

• Vocabulary and Context Clues: Our word detectives sharpen their vocabulary skills by using context clues to crack the case of unknown words. We explore Baloney, a playful book filled with silly words and concepts.
• Nonfiction Texts: We put our detective skills to the test with informational texts. We explore various texts to learn about different cultures and traditions through factual details and fascinating photographs.
• Celebrate and Share: We conclude our investigation with a fun book exchange. Students share their favorite books with each other, celebrating their newfound knowledge and love of reading.
