Sometimes students need focused punctuation practice that gives them the chance to slow down and pay attention to the details—like where to put that period, when to use a question mark, or how commas can change the meaning of a sentence. Having a specific, engaging activity dedicated to punctuation can be the difference between your child “kind of” understanding and really mastering those essential writing skills.

Engage Students with other Hands On Punctuation Activities
- Pass out 3 blank notecards to students and have them draw a period, a question mark and an exclamation point on each one. Read several sentences out loud and have your student(s) hold up the correct punctuation pattern to tell whether the sentence is a statement, question or exclamation.
- Find examples online or in person of incorrect punctuation usage. Have students correct the sentence with the right form of punctuation.
- Cut out pictures from magazines, have your student write a few sentences about the picture using different forms of punctuation.
- Using a blank die write the different forms of punctuation on it, roll the die and have students write sentences based on what is rolled.
