Pumpkin Activities for Fall

Pumpkins aren’t just for carving spooky faces or whipping up delicious pies; they also make fantastic tools for hands-on learning in the classroom. As fall approaches, why not incorporate this seasonal favorite into your lessons to engage and excite your students? Here are five exciting pumpkin-themed activities to bring a dash of autumnal flair to your classroom.

1. Pumpkin Investigations

Materials:

• Pumpkins of various sizes
• Measuring tapes or rulers
• Scales
• Clipboards
• Markers
• Paper

Turn your classroom into a scientific laboratory with pumpkin investigations. Provide each student or group with a pumpkin and a set of measuring tools. Instruct them to measure the circumference, weight, and height of their pumpkin. Encourage them to record their findings and make comparisons between pumpkins. Graph your findings on a large sheet of paper so that everyone can see the resuThis activity not only teaches measurement skills but also introduces the concept of data collection and analysis.

2. Pumpkin Storytelling

Materials:

• Small pumpkins

Then, ask them to use markers, construction paper, and glue to decorate their pumpkins to represent characters from a story they invent. 3. Pumpkin Math

Materials:

• Pumpkin seeds (cleaned and dried)
• Small containers
• Counting sheets
• Pencils

Math can be a lot more exciting when pumpkins are involved. Provide students with a set number of pumpkin seeds and ask them to count and record how many seeds are in each pumpkin. Then, encourage them to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using their seed counts. It’s a hands-on approach to teaching math that makes learning fun.

4. Pumpkin Art

Materials:

• Pumpkins (of different sizes and shapes)
• Paints
• Brushes
• Smocks or old t-shirts
• Newspapers

Let your students’ artistic talents flourish with pumpkin art. Hand out pumpkins and art supplies, and challenge your class to create unique pumpkin masterpieces. They can paint faces, abstract designs, or even scenes from their favorite stories. This activity allows students to express themselves artistically while embracing the fall spirit.

5. Pumpkin Seed Science

Materials:

• Pumpkin seeds (cleaned and dried)
• Ziplock bags
• Water
• Paper towels
• Small pots or cups
• Soil

Explore the life Cycle of a pumpkin with pumpkin seed science. Begin by having students place pumpkin seeds between damp paper towels in Ziplock bags. After a few days, when the seeds sprout, transplant them into small pots or cups filled with soil. Encourage students to observe and document the growth of their pumpkin plants over time. This activity not only teaches biology but also fosters responsibility as students care for their plants.
