St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and that means it’s time for green clothes, silly hats, and all things Irish! This fun holiday is filled with symbols like shamrocks, mischievous leprechauns, and even shiny pots of gold, which gives us ample opportunity to fill our lessons with whimsy and fun. This St. Patrick’s Day Math Fact practice game will help you take a mundane task of learning math facts and make it into something special.
This no fuss Race to the Pot of Gold Game is meant to be played solo but if you are looking for partner work, each student can take turns writing the answer to the math facts.
St. Patrick’s Day Math Fact Game
The beauty of this game is that there are only a few supplies that are needed to get started.

- A Game Marker
- A Die
- a Writing Tool
Directions:
Roll a die and move ahead the number of spaces on the die, following the trail to the pot of gold. When you land on the square add the number on the square with the number on the die and write the answer below it. If you land on a square with a picture, move ahead 2 spaces.
The Importance of Making Math Fun
I’m a big believer in “not everything has to be fun” but sometimes adding some extra fun to a subject that can sometimes get monotonous can help reinforce the skill being taught. Math facts are no different. Encouraging students to engage in their learning through hands on activities activates parts of the brain that might not typically be engaged while studying facts in a traditional manner.
In this activity we are taking the everyday practice of learning our addition facts and making it fun by adding a St. Patrick’s Day twist.

How Can this Game be Adapted?
This game can be adjusted to suit a variety of different difficulty levels with just a few adaptations:
- Use different kinds of dice. (4-sided, 6 sided, 8 sided)
- Add more than one dice and have students add multiple numbers.
- If students are familiar with negative numbers, have them subtract instead of add.
- Students can create their own gameboard and practice adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.
