What is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States that honors everyone who ever served in the military, both alive and dead. Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally a holiday that honored the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918.
In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” On June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

How is Veterans Day celebrated?
Every year Americans celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th. Traditionally Veterans Day is celebrated with local parades and celebrations to honor our service men and women. The American Flag is also flown.
How can we celebrate Veterans Day with our students?

- Write a letter or send a thank you card to those who have served our country or to someone who is currently serving.
- Wear a Red Poppy – Check out this poppy craft and this book The Poppy Lady
- Visit a nursing home or a Veterans hospital and speak with a veteran. Allow them to share stories about their service.
- Learn about the origin of our flag and the proper way to fly and store it.
- Send a gift box to troops overseas. The site anysoldier.com can help.
- Visit a local business owned by a vVeteran.
- Visit a National Cemetary and place flags on the graves.
- Learn a few different patriotic songs like America the Beautiful and the Star-Spangled Banner
- Participate in the Veterans History Project.
- Create a timeline of the different wars that Americans have participated in.
Did you know these facts about Veterans Day?
- Veterans Day does not have an apostrophe in it intentionally. This is because it is not a day that “belongs” to veterans, but rather it is a day for honoring all veterans.
- Veterans Day is not the same as Memorial Day. Veterans Day honors all servicemen, whether they are alive or dead. Memorial Day honors those who gave their life for their country.
- Veterans Day was once referred to as Armistice Day, which is still celebrated around the world in memory of the end of WWI
- The largest Veterans Day parade takes place in New York, but the longest running parade happens in Birmingham Alabama.
- Veterans Day is a Federal Holiday, all non-essential government offices are closed for the day at the local and state level.
