This might be my most favorite homeschooling year yet! This year I have the opportunity to be part of the Crew… the Homeschool Review crew that is. As an added benefit to this great community of other homeschooling families, I was able to review the SchoolhouseTeachers.com Yearly Membership site.
Ya’ll I had no idea that such awesomeness even existed for us in the homeschool community! In my former life as a public school teacher I had access to amazing online curriculum resources. I used them nearly everyday in my classroom. Since homeschooling my own children I have been piecing together videos and supplemental resources to go along with what we are studying. This post would be a mile long if I mentioned all the goodness that goes along with this membership, so I will leave it up to you to explore on your own and I will only share my favorites.
Video Resource Library
I was practically giddy when I saw the video resource library that SchoolhouseTeachers.com offers. There are great videos on practically every subject area. We haven’t explored them all of course but I landed quickly on the art ones because it’s a subject I know little about and have always struggled to teach. One of my daughters is really artistic so we jumped right into the Drawing with Realism lessons. But if you rock art like a 1980’s cover band, you can skip those lessons and focus on the other video lessons like history, bible, apologetics, languages and more. Do you love the Drive Thru History Series? Yep… They have them! And although there is a plethora of information in that section alone, my most favorite part of the video library- is the free membership to Right Now Media!
Right Now Media
Our church actually subscribes to this resource already so I have had access to it for a few years. But I tell EVERYONE I know about the awesomeness of this video resource. There are too many good things to mention but it’s basically hundreds of great videos. While their library doesn’t include all RightNow Media content partners, it does include all RightNow Media Original series like Bible studies from teachers like Francis Chan, Chip Ingram, Jennie Allen, and others.
Music
Okay, the music lessons in this section are probably not going to take the place of a one-on- one instructor. But If paying for lessons are not an option for you, then these online classes will help get you started. I was especially intrigued by the guitar lessons because my son has been taking group lessons for a year and has just now decided he actually likes the guitar and wants to practice. The guitar lessons here will be a great supplement for when we are not doing classes.
There is also a whole video lesson series on learning the recorder. I bought recorders for the kids several years ago with this grand plan of teaching them how to play. However, I did not take into account that I have zero musical ability and never learned to read a single note- so I’m thinking I’ll dust those babies off and let SchoolhouseTeachers.com teach them how to play.
World Book
As if the other resources were not enough to sell you on this membership, this right here my friend is where you stop questioning it and just give into the goodness and sign up. In all seriousness- remember when I mentioned being sad about not having all those free resources at my public school teacher’s finger tips? This is just like one of those resources I was missing. Anything you or your children want to know- right at the touch of your finger. Need a video for your science lesson? Got it. Need to supplement your history lesson with a biography on Martin Luther King? Yep right there. Every subject you could possibly need help with is covered.
There is a section called World Book Classroom. Most school topics are covered and you can use it to teach and assess a whole unit. I started with the Living Things unit. What I like about this section is that the information is grade appropriate, it’s self paced and you can assess learning with a pre-assessment and a post assessment.
