Sharing is caring!

Fall is officially here, and that means it’s time for all things pumpkin! This season, ditch the pumpkin spice lattes (just kidding, kind of) and dive into some hands-on learning with your little ones. We’ve got a fun and engaging pumpkin size ordering activity that’s perfect for preschoolers.

This printable activity will help your preschoolers develop important size and ordering concepts while getting into the fall spirit. With just a few simple supplies, you can create a learning experience that is both educational and entertaining. Get ready to size up those pumpkins and watch your preschoolers’ skills grow!

Supplies Needed for the Pumpkin Size Ordering Activity:

  • Printed copies of the Pumpkin Size Ordering mats (download link below!)
  • Scissors
  • Crayons or markers (optional)
  • Glue (optional)

What Prep Work do you need to do?:

  1. Print: Print out the Pumpkin Size Ordering mats. Make sure to print in color if you want the mats to have a fun fall theme.
  2. Cut: Help your preschoolers (or have them practice their cutting skills!) by cutting out the pumpkins.

How do Preschoolers complete this activity?

  1. Introduce the mats: Show your preschoolers the three mats labeled “Small,” “Medium,” and “Large.” Talk about the different sizes and what they mean.
  2. Size up those pumpkins! Have your preschoolers pick a pumpkin and figure out which mat it belongs on. Encourage them to use words like “bigger,” “smaller,” and “the same.”
  3. Complete the mats: Continue until all the pumpkins have found their rightful place!

Extra Bonus Ideas for the Size Sorting Activity:

  • Decorate: Let your preschoolers color the pumpkins before cutting them out. They can get creative with different colors and patterns.
  • Make a game: Turn it into a race! See who can fill their mats the fastest.
  • Real-world connection: Go on a pumpkin hunt! Visit a pumpkin patch and have your preschoolers find examples of small, medium, and large pumpkins.

Adaptations for Different Skill Levels:

  • For younger learners: Start with just two sizes (small and large) to make it a bit easier.
  • For older learners: Introduce more size variations (extra small, extra large) or have them order the pumpkins from smallest to largest on one mat.

Extra Resources to continue the Pumpkin learning:

  • Books: Pair this activity with some fun fall books about pumpkins, like The Biggest Pumpkin Ever or Pumpkin Soup.
  • Songs: Sing some pumpkin songs while you work, like “Five Little Pumpkins” or “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater.”
