Teach the Friendly Letter with Nursery Rhymes

Sharing is caring!

Do you remember the first time you wrote a letter? I recall it was early in grade school and we were given pen pals in another state. My pen pal and I exchanged letters all year long and then we never spoke again. But I recall how exciting it was to get a letter and see it addressed just to me.

While letter writing is certainly on the decline in our techie society, it’s still an important skill to teach.  Have some writing fun with your students while you teach the friendly letter with nursery rhymes.

What is A Friendly Letter?

Friendly letters are usually more informal than other types of letters. They are typically written to people that you have a relationship with. This could be a friend, family member, fellow student or co-worker. The letter typically takes a more relaxed approach in its writing and sounds… friendly.

How to Teach the Friendly Letter

Friendly letters do not need to be long. As long as the basic parts of the letter are taught, students can successfully write a friendly letter.

Parts of a Friendly Letter

  • The Heading includes the date which the letter is written.
  • The greeting includes the name of the person to whom the letter is written. It usually begins with “Dear.”
  • The Body of the letter is everything that the sender wants to say to the recipient.
  • The Closing is an expression of feeling and is often ended with the words: sincerely, yours truly, your friend, love, best wishes.
  • The Signature identifies the author of the letter

Types of Letters
