Wulf the Saxon an Heirloom Audio Productions Review
With their latest adventure, Heirloom Audio Productions brings the Norman conquest to life with Wulf the Saxon! This audio adaptation of the G.A. Hentry novel will pull you into to story line with it’s all star cast of characters and it’s top notch audio production. It was easy to become immersed into the story as we followed along with each character in their heroic attempts. The sound effects and distinct character voices allowed our imagination to run wild with visions of shipwrecks, lost love and characters fighting valiantly in battle.
We were given a copy of this two disk CD in exchange for our review. Having a love of historical fiction I thought this would be a fun addition to our lunch time read-aloud time. My two oldest children are audio learners, so any opportunity they have to listen to a story rather than read one, they jump on it. For the rest of us, not having something visual to follow along with is more of a challenge. We have to work harder at keeping the story line straight. This is one of the reasons why I like books on tape. {ahem, I mean CD} It gives us a chance to work on those skills that we are often lacking but are also needed.
The Storyline:
If you are not familiar with the story of Wulf the Saxon, this is a fictional tale of a young Englishman named Wulf, who serves under King Herald. The story immerses you in the culture of life around the year 1065 when the Normans invaded England. You will easily find yourself wrapped up with the bonds of friendship, broken hearted over a marriage that could never be, and biting your nails waiting to see who is going to make it through the many battles.
Throughout the story we see Wulf risk his life for his king and friends, we see him fighting bravely for the cause of his king and country at all cost, and along the way we root for the possibility of love between him and Agnes. It’s not hard to pull out the major themes of love, loyalty and sacrifice from this story.
Because this particular time frame was one that we have not studied thus far in our homeschool, it gave us the opportunity to discuss the different aspects of society at this time. We learned the difference between a duke and an earl and why a King might have to marry for the security of his country and not necessarily out of love. We were also able to do a quick lesson on the Battle of Hastings and explain it’s relevance to even us today. I’m looking forward to being able to revisit this in the future when we come upon this section of history.

Zoe (14yrs): “I knew from the start that Wulf would marry Agnes. They were both kind of awkward with each other.”
Zack (12yrs): “I really liked how adventurous and daring Wulf was. He was brave and wasn’t scared of anything.”
Olivia (9yrs) “This story teaches us how to be a good friend, and why trust is important.”
Maddie (6yrs) “I liked the sound and the talking”

If you have children that enjoy wars and battles, then this is going to be a must have on your reading/listening list. The story line is so captivating that you can almost picture yourself fighting right along side Wulf and his comrades. Heirloom Audio Productions really pulled together an amazing top notch cast to produce this story.
