ABC order and Dictionary Skills- Skill Builder
In Today’s Skill Builder Activity, we are going to work on ABC order and Dictionary Skills. Both of these are skills that will be needed for the rest of your children’s lives, so they are best learned early on.
Why Teach ABC order?
Gone are the days where we are sifting through the card catalog or finding a name in the phone book, but most people don’t realize how much you use ABC order in everyday life. Here are just a few ways:
- Using a Dictionary
- Using the Table of Contents in a Non- Fiction book
- Locating a Fiction book at a library or Book Store
- Finding the right spice at the grocery store
- Organizing Files
- Looking through phone contacts
- Locating a song in a song list
How do you teach Alphabetizing?
First: Start simple by just mixing up alphabet cards and having your student put them back in order.
Next: Take sight words or vocabulary cards and practice alphabetizing by the first letter
Finally: Challenge students by putting words in order by the second, third or fourth letter of the word.
Give students a lot of practice by using real world situations like finding a word in a dictionary.
