One of my most favorite things about being a teacher was that I could use all the holidays to take the mundane tasks of teaching and add a fun spin to it. St. Patrick’s Day always gave way for some good ol’ fashioned leprechaun antics. These St. Patrick’s Day Math Activities are going to make you the hero at home or in the classroom.

What is the History of St. Patrick’s Day?
St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated annually on March 17th, is a cultural and religious holiday commemorating Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. While the holiday has evolved over time, its roots lie in honoring the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrating Irish heritage and culture. Bringing St. Patrick’s Day into the classroom or home can be a fun and engaging way to incorporate festive elements into learning.

10 St. Patrick’s Day Math Ideas
There are so many fun ways that we can add a little extra fun to our math lessons in March.
- Shamrock Counting: Cut out shamrocks from green construction paper and write numbers on them. Have children count the shamrocks and arrange them in numerical order.
- Rainbow Measurement: Use colorful construction paper to create a rainbow. Have children measure the length of each color strip using a ruler or measuring tape. Check out what PreKinders has done with this activity.
- Leprechaun Coin Patterns: Create patterns using gold coins (chocolate or plastic). Have children identify and continue the patterns.
- Pot of Gold Graphing: Provide a picture of a pot of gold and various items associated with St. Patrick’s Day (shamrocks, leprechauns, rainbows). Have children create a graph to represent the number of each item in the picture.
- Lucky Charm Sorting: Gather a variety of lucky charms (e.g., horseshoes, four-leaf clovers, rainbows). Have children sort the charms by attribute, such as color, shape, or size. A great example is this post by Learning Resources.
- St. Patrick’s Day Word Problems: Create word problems incorporating St. Patrick’s Day themes, such as counting shamrocks, dividing gold coins, or measuring rainbows.
- Shamrock Fractions: Divide shamrocks into equal parts and have children identify the fractions represented. Math Geek Mama has a great activity for this.
- Leprechaun Trap Design: Challenge children to design a leprechaun trap using geometric shapes and measurements.
- St. Patrick’s Day Number Puzzles: Create number puzzles using St. Patrick’s Day symbols, such as shamrocks, leprechauns, and pots of gold.
- Rainbow Number Line: Create a number line using rainbow colors. Have children practice addition and subtraction by hopping along the number line.
