Supplies needed for the Fall Math Fact Game

  • Game Board: Print and laminate the colorful fall-themed game board.
  • Game Markers: Gather small objects like acorns, mini erasers, or colorful pom-poms for each player to use as their game marker.
  • Spinner, Pencil and paperclip
  • Math Fact Cards: Cut out the set of fall-themed word problem cards that focus on addition and subtraction facts.

How to prep for the Fall themed Math Fact Game

  1. Print and Assemble: Print the game board, math fact cards, and spinner. Laminate the game board for durability. This is the laminator that I use.
  2. Cut and Organize: Cut out the individual math fact cards and place them in a pile or container.
  3. Gather Game Pieces: Collect the game markers and spinner.

How to Play the Game

  1. Set Up: Each player chooses a game marker and places it on the starting line of the game board.
  2. Take Turns: Players take turns spinning the spinner or rolling the dice.
  3. Move and Solve: The player moves their marker the number of spaces indicated on the spinner or dice.
  4. Fall Picture Spaces: If a player lands on a space with a fall picture, they draw a math fact card and solve the word problem. If they answer correctly, they stay on that space. If incorrect, they move back one space.
  5. Reach the Finish: The first player to reach the finish line wins!

Bonus Ideas for the Game!

  • Teamwork: Pair students up and have them work together to solve the word problems.
  • Movement Break: Incorporate movement into the game. For example, have students do 5 jumping jacks if they land on a pumpkin space.
  • Creative Answers: Encourage students to illustrate their answers to the word problems on a whiteboard or piece of paper.
  • Vary the Facts: Include a mix of addition, subtraction, and even some simple multiplication or division problems to challenge more advanced learners.

Adaptations for Different Skill Levels

  • Beginner: Use simpler word problems with smaller numbers and focus primarily on addition.
  • Intermediate: Include a mix of addition and subtraction problems and increase the number range.
  • Advanced: Introduce more complex word problems, incorporate multiplication and division, or have students create their own word problems.

Extra Resources to use with the Game

  • Fall Counting Mats: Provide students with fall-themed counting mats and manipulatives like acorns or pumpkin seeds to practice counting and number recognition.
  • Fall Books: Read aloud fall-themed books that incorporate math concepts like counting, patterns, and shapes.
  • Fall Songs: Sing songs about fall that include counting or number recognition.
