Preschool Dinosaur Number Matching Puzzle

Sharing is caring!

As parents and educators, we’re always looking for fun and engaging ways to introduce early math concepts to our little ones. One way to do this is through hands-on activities that combine learning with play. This simple Dinosaur number matching puzzle will help preschoolers practice their counting skills while matching numbers with pictures.

How to Play the Preschool Dinosaur Number Matching Game:

  1. Spread Out: Lay all the puzzle pieces face up on a table or the floor.
  2. Find a Match: Encourage your child to pick up a number piece and then find the dinosaur piece that shows the same number of dinosaurs.
  3. Roar-some Connections: As they match the pieces, talk about the numbers and dinosaurs. For example, “Look! You found three dinosaurs to match the number three!”
  4. Complete the Set: Continue until all the number and dinosaur pairs are matched.

Why This Game is Great for Preschoolers:

  • Concrete Learning: Young children learn best through hands-on experiences. Manipulating the puzzle pieces helps them understand the concept of numbers in a tangible way.
  • Number Recognition: The game reinforces number recognition skills, a key foundation for early math development.
  • One-to-One Correspondence: Matching the number to the correct number of dinosaurs helps develop this essential skill, which is crucial for understanding counting.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Picking up, rotating, and placing the puzzle pieces helps refine fine motor skills.
  • Fun Factor: Dinosaurs are universally loved by kids. Adding this theme makes the learning experience more exciting and engaging.

More Developmentally Appropriate Number Activities

  • Counting Everything: Encourage your child to count the steps as you walk, the snacks on their plate, or the buttons on their shirt. This helps them connect numbers to real-world objects.
  • Number Scavenger Hunt: Hide number cards around the house or yard. Have your child find them and match them to the corresponding number of objects (e.g., find the number “5” and then collect five rocks).
  • Number Songs and Rhymes: Sing songs like “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” or “Ten in the Bed.” These catchy tunes make learning about numbers fun and memorable.
  • Sensory Counting: Fill a bin with rice, beans, or water beads. Hide small toys or objects inside and have your child count them as they dig them out.
  • Baking Together: Cooking is a great way to introduce measuring, counting, and fractions in a real-world context. Let your child help you count out ingredients and measure them.
  • Dice Games: Roll dice and count the dots together. You can create simple games like “Race to 10” by rolling the dice and moving a game piece along a path.
  • Card Games: Use a standard deck of cards to play simple matching or counting games.
